It senses the oil pressure and turns an indicator light off and on or controls an oil pressure gauge. The oil pressure switch is closed in the idle state. When the ignition is switched on the oil pressure indicator light comes on. If oil pressure is built up after starting the engine the switching contact in the switch opens and the earth contact for the indicator lamp is interrupted.
