Bikes come in all shapes and sizes, and choosing the right one for you depends on your body type, your cycling habits, and personal preference. Whether you’re a keen or casual cyclist, it’s important that you’re comfortable – so make sure you properly measure yourself and check out sizing guides. The key elements you need to be aware of are your height, the length of your inside leg and the frame size of your chosen bike. Check out our guide here.
Electric bikes (or e-bikes) are built in the same way as regular pedal-powered bikes, but they feature some extra components – a motor, a battery, a sensor and a controller. All e-bikes are simply activated by pedalling – the motor kicks in when it is triggered by a sensor while the battery gives electric energy to the motor. You still need to pedal and steer as normal, but you’ll get an added boost to make the ride easier – extra handy if you’re heading up quad-burning inclines or hilly terrain.
It’s important to learn how to ride a bike properly, particularly when you’re helping a child to learn. Before setting off, you should make sure they have a helmet and that their saddle is in the right position. A balance bike can give your child the extra stability to get used to the idea of cycling, while you should also find a quiet place for them to practice. After encouraging them to use their feet as pedals to push against the ground, we recommend cycling with stabilisers and setting off at a slow pace. Check out our full guide here.
Adult bikes are measured by their frame size, usually from the centre of the chainset to the top of the seat post. Mountain bikes are generally measured in inches (in), and most road bikes are measured in centimetres (cm). Check out our sizing guides and advice for choosing the right size of bike here.
