New Year, New Drive: 10 Essential Car Maintenance Checks to Start the Year Right

Get ready for the new year with our 10 essential car maintenance checks, so you can start your year of right.

1. Battery Health

Winter can be tough on car batteries, so it’s important to test yours if you notice any issues, or before setting off on a long journey. We have a wide range of battery testers in stock, giving you peace of mind that your battery is working as it should.

Feeling a little flat? A fast-acting battery charger could be all you need. Our NOCO and SIP chargers are ideal for keeping your battery topped up and ready to go.

2. Tyres & Pressure Checks

Before making any long-distance drive, it’s vital to check the condition of all your tyres. While it might seem like a boring task, it could save you from bigger problems down the road.

Check your tyre tread depth using a tyre depth gauge and make sure your tyres are correctly inflated with a tyre inflator kit

3. Wipers & Screenwash

Clear visibility is essential, especially in winter conditions. Check your windscreen wipers to ensure they clear the screen effectively. If they show visible wear or are streaking, skipping, or squeaking, it’s time to replace them.

Use our windscreen wiper finder to make sure you get the correct fit for your vehicle

You should also check your screenwash levels before any journey and always carry a spare bottle in case you run out on the road.

4. Oils Levels

Checking your oil level is another quick and easy task to tick off your car maintenance checklist. Using the dipstick, ensure the oil level sits between the MIN and MAX markers, and top up if necessary.

We stock multiple oils from the Ultratec range  or you can use our Shell Oil finder tool t o find the right oil for your vehicle.

5. Brake Check

Unsurprisingly, your brakes are absolutely vital for your safety, so early signs of wear should never be ignored.

Listen out for squealing or grinding noises, which can indicate worn or damaged brake pads. When pressing the brake pedal, it should feel firm and responsive. If you notice vibrations through the steering wheel or find you need to press the pedal further than usual, this could point to issues with the brake discs

6. Light & Bulbs

Having a full set of working lights is essential  not just for your safety, but for the safety of other road users. Even one faulty bulb can reduce visibility and make your vehicle harder to see.

Do a quick walkaround with your lights switched on and check for any broken bulbs or dull, fading lights.

7. Interior refresh

While not essential for everyone, a clean and tidy interior can help keep your car clutter-free and reduce distractions while driving. Our interior valeting kits from Kärcher and Draper make it easy to freshen up your cabin.

You could also consider new floor mats. Available in eco, standard, and premium options, this finder tool will help find the perfect fit for your vehicle.

8. Watch out for cold mornings

We’re not out of winter just yet. Expect cold, frosty mornings and make sure you’re prepared. Stock up on de-Icer and keep a few spare ice scrapers handy to make those early starts easier.

9. Exterior Protection

Cleaning your car during winter is still important. Dirt, salt, and moisture build up quickly and can cause long-term damage if left untreated  even if your car looks clean on the surface.

Our valeting kits and pressure washers help remove winter grime quickly, protecting your car while keeping it looking great.

10. Emergency Kits

Be prepared for the unexpected. If you’re travelling during the winter season, make sure you have a winter emergency kit stored in your car. While we hope you’ll never need it, it’s always better to be prepared.
