International Repair Day is here!

Saturday 15th October marks the sixth annual International Repair Day, a day which promotes and celebrates the value of fixing.

The premise of the day is to highlight how everyone can do a little more to take better care of their belongings – and that sometimes, it’s better to fix what’s broken rather than go out and replace it. It’s all about creating a more sustainable and repair-minded world, reducing wastefulness and finding the value in fixing things.

Initially dreamed up in collaboration with the Open Repair Alliance, an international community of businesses and organisations that have banded together to create a world where electronic products are sustainable and easier to repair, the day has since taken off on social media, with numerous events also taking place around the world.

The theme of this year’s event is ‘Repair Everywhere’ – and yes, there’s ways for everyone to get involved, from novices to experts. How ever people choose to join in, DIY enthusiasts are being asked to share what they’re doing on social media. After all, if more people talk about repair, maybe more people will be encouraged to think differently next time something breaks.

So, how can you get involved in International Repair Day?

Whether you’re online or offline, here are some ways you can get involved on the day:

  • Attend a community repair event. On International Repair Day, there are often Repair Cafés set up by electricians, handypersons and DIY enthusiasts. In the UK alone, there are numerous events lined up over the weekend. See here for more info.
  • Support a local repair business.
  • Fix something yourself or share the skills with others.
  • Share a picture of your repair (successful or not).
  • Shop with Arnold Clark Autoparts.
